Hi, I’m Tommy Karr — artist, writer, illustrator, and joy-seeker.
I’m married to my amazing husband, Matt, and we’re proud parents to two beloved fur babies: Dixie, our high-spirited dog, and Zoey, our endlessly curious cat. Matt and I have been together since 2012 and married since 2015. We both worked in the NYC theatre industry before returning to Michigan to be closer to family — and to begin building a life rooted in creativity, community, and a little bit of chaos.
I tell stories across mediums, from playful picture books to introspective essays, always with heart and a little humor.
My children’s book, “Mabel Stanley and the Town That Was Built All Wrong,” invites young readers into a world of misfit architecture, creative problem-solving, and the courage to pursue their interests regardless of society’s expectations of what is “normal.” It’s a celebration of individuality, imagination, and the quiet power of staying true to yourself.
I’m currently deep in the writing of “Nunn,” a genre-blending, emotionally rich fantasy that reimagines the life of the White Rabbit from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. In this story, a soft-hearted rabbit wakes in a dungeon with no memory and is sent on a surreal quest to retrieve a mysterious girl named Alice. It’s whimsical and political, equal parts fairytale and resistance story — exploring themes of identity, trauma, and found family in a world that’s both enchanted and unjust.
